With the growth of any city, comes the added need for new amenities. That is a situation the town of Windermere finds itself in when trying to decide whether to add a fire station.

Windermere currently has a five-year agreement with the City of Ocoee to respond to all calls. They entered into the deal four years ago at $500,000 per year with a $50,000 increase each year.

The potential addition for Windermere has come to light due to a recent public facilities assessment from the Winter Park-based Architects Design Group. They have presented the Town Council with options for where to build a new police department, public works facility, and town administration department.

Three of the five proposals brought to their attention include the addition of a 4,500-square-foot two-bay fire substation. The station is estimated to cost Windermere as much as $1.19 million.

The figure presented for construction does not include the cost of any technology or equipment that would be used in the building. Ocoee would staff the substation with personnel.

Windermere Mayor Gary Bruhn is not throwing his support behind any specific proposal. The idea for the new fire station is being presented at town workshops.
